Questions to your breeder
Questions For Your Labrador Puppy Breeder

1. How long have they been breeding?

Answer: If they have been a breeder for 10 to 20 years of breeding experience is preferred. You will find with breeding Labrador puppies, as with anything else, the long you do it, and the more frequently, the better you are at it.
 2. What are their Labrador puppies raised for?

Answer: Field trial lab puppy breeders are aiming for a champion through performance. This is the same logic as giving your 16 year old a Ferrari for their first car. It makes no sense once you understand the basics.

Show labs are bred for looks only, since this is the attribute that wins awards and championships.

Notice that with both field and show, championships are the goal.
3. What is their ratio of Hip-Dysplasia?

Answer: 1 in 25 is pretty much industry standard. However, it really doesn't make sense that one in every twenty five Labs, have Hip Dysplasia (read article on Hip Dysplasia). Find a breeder with a higher ratio, and listen to what they have to say. A 5 Star Lab breeder would have a ratio a least 1 to 100.
4. Does the breeder believe in microchips?

Answer: Quite simply, this is the easiest way to prevent your new puppy from being lost or stolen. Microchips are available from several manufactures and allow identification of your Lab. If your Lab could speak, microchips wouldn't be necessary.
5. Does the breeder have a well founded belief on nutrition?

Answer: Going with what the vet recommends is a way the breeder can avoid accountability. This does seem to be a form on "hiding behind a degree". Since veterinarians are not carnivore nutritionists, they usually have no clue about proper nutrition, and only regurgitate what the last dog food salesman told them. This is a scary thought, since the dog food salesman only cares about moving dog food and generally has no idea what is in his product. On top of it, some companies offer rewards for the veterinarian that moves the move food, usually a nice car. All of this boils down to, when asked what is a good food, nutrition is not competently addressed.

5 Star Lab breeders are educated and dispense quality information. When you find a breeder you can trust, listen to that breeder and follow their advice.

Remember, veterinarians are not breeders. Breeders are involved with all aspects of dogs. Quality breeders are where pure bred Labrador Retrievers start their lives. Not at a pet store or Vet office.
6. Are the Labrador Retrievers registered with a pure bred organizatio?

Answer: This answer requires some explanation. It is a fad to mix pure bred Labrador Retrievers with Golden Retrievers, Poodles and Weimaraners (to achieve "Silver or Gray Labs").
